The primary functions of the Code Enforcement Department are:
  • To educate the public in code issues
  • To work with the citizens of our community
We are committed to professional code enforcement that is responsive to our citizens. In addition, officers privately enforce regulations as their case load allows. More information on each of these violation types can by located by referring to the City Code of Ordinance.

Code Enforcement is committed to enforcing the City of Wixom's ordinances to abate and prevent nuisances within the community, through the inspection of commercial and residential properties in order to uphold and enforce codes and community standards thereby maintaining the City’s high standards of curb appeal.

The Code Enforcement workload is principally complaint-generated. The personnel receives a substantial number of complaints each year concerning alleged violations of the City Code of Laws and Ordinances. Each one is investigated to determine whether a violation exists.

In partnership with SafeBuilt Inc., the City and the code enforcement staff works with Wixom residents and business owners to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living and working environment. We work with residents, neighborhood associations, public service agencies, business owners and other City of Wixom departments to enhance the quality of life in our city by eliminating unsightly or hazardous conditions in our neighborhoods and businesses. Code Enforcement covers a variety of codes and ordinances that the City has adopted over the years to address issues and concerns that affect all aspects of our City’s quality of life.

By administering a fair and comprehensive enforcement program that corrects violations of municipal codes, our staff enhances property values and preserves the community values that make Wixom a highly desirable city in which to live, work and play.

Common Residential and Business Concerns include:

  • Visible trash or debris
  • Inoperable vehicles, boats, trailers or other equipment stored in public view
  • Illegal temporary signs, as outlined in the City Code of Ordinance  (view sign handout)
  • Outside storage of goods or equipment
  • Lack of landscape maintenance (contact DPW )

Problems are addressed in a confidential, friendly and understanding way. Upon receiving a complaint, the code enforcement staff will notify the property owner either by letter or phone to explain the problem and suggest possible solutions. The property owner is then given time to take care of the violation, whether it be by moving an inoperable vehicle to the garage, trimming back weeds, repairing a fence, or relocating trash cans and debris. While most property owners comply after the first notification, those who don't may face additional enforcement action.

The ultimate goal is simply compliance. By working with the code enforcement staff, the City of Wixom will continue to maintain a better community presence for all who work and live here.

If you have a Code Enforcement concern, you may submit your request online using the attached link or contact (248) 624-0880 for more information.

The City of Wixom has become a participating municipality in this program. It provides for the escrow of fire insurance as established by Act 495 of the Public Acts of 1980. The intention is to uniformly apply the provisions of Section 2845 or Section 2227 to all properties within the City of Wixom in order to protect and promote the public health, safety and welfare.

These provisions of this act provide that a portion of certain casualty losses for fire or explosion otherwise payable by insurers may be withheld in escrow by our community in order to secure, repair, replace or remove damaged structures which violate the City of Wixom’s health or safety standards.
