The City is reviewing our Master Plan. We need your input!

What is a Master Plan?
The master plan is a road map for land use, development, reinvestment, transportation, and housing to guide the City of Wixom from a known present to an unknown future. It directly influences decisions by Wixom’s Planning Commission and City Council on development and redevelopment in Wixom, infrastructure investments, and zoning. This document was most recently updated, and adopted by Wixom City Council in August of 2020. A link to the current Master Plan can be found below:

Why is the City Reviewing the Master Plan now?
Per the Michigan Planning Enabling Act, At least every 5 years after adoption of a master plan, a planning commission shall review the master plan and determine whether to commence the procedure to amend the master plan or adopt a new master plan.

What is the process?
City officials and staff are working with Carlisle Wortman Associates (CWA) to review the master plan with a compelling vision supported by realistic goals and objectives.

City staff and consultants will facilitated the process with five phases:

  1. Project Initiation - This phase includes review and analysis of existing plans, reviewing community data from the Census, SEMCOG, ESRI, and other sources, and working with the Planning Commission to set the vision, goals, and objectives for the Master Plan Review process.
  2. Issue Identification - This phase focuses on the specific areas of concern that the Master plan will dive into most deeply. As an example, the City of Wixom has a major focus on it's downtown development efforts, improving the attractiveness and viability of it's commercial areas, and the promotion of pedestrian-oriented amenities.
  3. Community Engagement - Working with the Planning Commission, the City will host a variety of public engagement opportunities to get feedback from businesses and residents, including surveys, various focus groups, and open-houses to make sure the focus areas and future goals and objectives are in alignment with the community's desires and expectations.
  4. Plan Design & Drafting - After all available data-points and public inputs are taken into account, staff and consultants would work with City officials and the Planning Commission to draft an updated plan that accommodates the updated goals and objectives.
  5. Final Plan Adoption - Per the Michigan Planning Enabling Act, the Master Plan Draft must be distributed to neighboring communities for a period of sixty-three (63) days for their review and potential feedback. Once this timeframe has passed, the Planning Commission can consider additional revisions based on comments received from neighboring communities or schedule a public hearing. After a public hearing and recommendation by the Planning Commission, the plan would be considered by City Council prior to adoption.

Community Engagement Opportunities
The City will be promoting opportunities for public engagement and feedback throughout the spring and summer of 2025. Those opportunities, as well as the results of those opportunities will be summarized in this section once complete.
