Water Advisory – The City of Wixom's

Boil Water Advisory has ENDED

Water Conservation is NO LONGER Required

Original 42-Inch Main Break Repair Update Below

CURRENT UPDATE October 30, 2025

The Great Lakes Water Authority's (GLWA) inspection of the originally broken 42-inch watermain serving Wixom is complete and additional repair options are being reviewed.  The timeline for the 42-inch water main to be returned to service should be released by GLWA the week of November 3rd.

GLWA has lifted their request to conserve water due to the fact that the water main currently supplying Wixom's water is stabilized and providing steady water pressure.

For more detail, you can review the latest GLWA release HERE.

October 15, 2025 Update

The Great Lakes Water Authority's (GLWA) evaluation and additional repair activity on the 42-inch water main continue.  The latest GLWA Release, available HERE, makes no mention of any estimated date or date range for the restoration to service of the 42-inch water main.  This means:

  • the 42-inch water main will NOT be restored to service on or before October 16th
  • residents and businesses should continue to conserve water until the 42-inch water main is restored to service at some future date

We thank you for your continuing water conservation efforts and for your patience as this water emergency continues for our community.

October 6, 2025 Update

As the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) repair of the original 42-inch pipe main break continues, we have received an update from GLWA.  During the process, additional issues have been discovered beyond the originally required repair activity.  GLWA is adding a supplemental repair phase to address those issues as well to lessen the risk of additional breaks and associated impacts in the future.

The estimated timeframe for all repairs to be completed has now been pushed out to October 14th through October 16th.

The Water Conservation Advisory remains in place until the 42-inch main is restored.

October 4, 2025 Update

While the Boil Water Advisory (BWA) has ended, the City and area are still in a water emergency.  The temporary pipe currently supplying out water is smaller than the 42-inch pipe.  This fact, combined with too much water usage for the reduced supply, lead to the Boil Water Advisory that started September 29th.

Failure to conserve water could put us right back in another BWA.  RESTRICT your water usage.  At a minimum, avoid outdoor water usage.  Do not wash cars or run sprinkler systems and TURN OFF automatic sprinkler cycles.

Too many people are not cooperating and putting everyone at risk of another BWA.  As a result, the Police Department will be addressing this fact.  They will start by reminding of the requirement to stop sprinkling lawns.  Your cooperation is important, required and may help us avoid another BWA.

This requirement will be in place until the 42-inch main is restored to service, estimated to happen between October 7th and October 12th.

October 3, 2025 Update

The City of Wixom is no longer under a Boil Water Advisory.

Residents and businesses are STILL EXPECTED TO CONSERVE WATER until the repair and return to service of the 42-inch water main is completed by the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA).  Do not sprinkle your lawns and this includes deactivating programmed watering cycles.  Again, conserve water until the 42-inch main is returned to service.  The current estimate of the timing for restoration of the 42-inch main is 4 to 7 days.

Please use and the follow the appropriate checklist below before consuming the water:

October 2, 2025 Update

In better news, the City's next water sample did test negative and passed the testing process.  This becomes the first of the two required negative/passing samples.  We should have the results on the second sample tomorrow.  If that is likewise negative and also passes, we will be able to lift the Boil Water Advisory tomorrow morning, on Friday, October 3rd.

October 2, 2025 Update

Unfortunately, the City's first sample tested positive and failed the testing process.  This means that the next sample we submitted for testing yesterday will, in effect, become our first sample if it passes.  We expect results on that sample early in the afternoon today, Thursday, October 2nd.  We have submitted a new second sample to the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) today.  With the testing time required, this means the earliest we will be able to lift the Boil Water Advisory in Wixom is tomorrow, Friday, October 3rd.  Certainly, this is disappointing for everyone affected in our community.

We have also been informed the first samples for neighboring communities on the same supply line were negative and did pass the testing process.  If their second samples also pass, they may lift the Boil Water Advisory in their communities today, i.e. before Wixom.  After investigating with our staff and GLWA representatives, no one has a ready explanation for the different testing results.  The difference in results is best described as anomalous, or simply unexpected.

The City remains focused on lifting the Boil Water Advisory as soon as possible but only when it is proven safe to do so.

October 1, 2025 Update

The City collected our first water system sample yesterday.  We expect the test results on that first sample tomorrow morning, i.e. early on Thursday, October 2nd.

Also, we did pull our second water system sample today and have provided it to the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA).  The test results on that sample are expected in the afternoon on Thursday, October 2nd.

If both samples successfully comply with the required water quality standards, the Boil Water Advisory could be lifted late Thursday, October 2nd.

October 1, 2025 Update

The City of Wixom flushed hydrants and took the first sample from our system with the goal of lifting the current Boil Water Advisory (BWA).  The sampling occurred on September 30th in the evening.  As mentioned previously, we will need two samples, each requiring 24 hours processing time, that successfully pass the testing processes in order to lift the BWA.  We hope to have the first sample pass and then take a second sample today, Wednesday, October 1st.

IF the two samples successfully pass the testing process, the earliest we will be able to lift the Boil Water Advisory is late on Thursday, October 2nd.

We are currently receiving Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) water through an alternative, and much smaller, 24-inch water main.  We usually receive GLWA water through a 42-inch water main, the one that broke last week on Thursday and is currently being repaired by GLWA.  Due to this smaller water supply, we are still requesting a high level of cooperation in conserving water, i.e. limiting your usage to the greatest extent possible.  Please avoid car washing, sprinkling of lawns and other non-essential uses of water.

The temporary, 24-inch water main cannot supply the level of water that the 42-inch main can and if usage is too great, the pressure in the system could again fall below acceptable levels and result in another Boil Water Advisory.  The reason for the current BWA, which began the morning of Monday, September 29th, is usage exceeded supply through the alternative 24-inch water main and pressure dropped below safe levels.

Your conservation cooperation will help in our efforts to lift the BWA and avoid another before the 42-inch water main is repaired, tested, cleared and returned to service.

As mentioned previously, the restoration of service through the 42-inch water main is expected to take 6 to 11 days (adjusted from yesterday).

September 30th Update

The efforts to restore water service pressure and water quality continue.  The following are key information highlights from the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) updates on their website and information gathered and/or provided by the City of Wixom:

  • GLWA continues the repair of the 42-inch water main that broke on Thursday, September 25th, impacting our area’s water supply
    • Novi went on a Boil Water Advisory at that time
    • Wixom had a very temporary recommendation to boil water on that day but lifted it later in the day
  • The communities of Wixom, Commerce Township and Walled Lake experienced another development at about 6:15 AM on Monday, September 29th which caused a loss in water pressure:
    • as a result, these newly affected communities issued a Boil Water Advisory (BWA)
    • The City of Novi was previously under a BWA since the start of these events on Thursday, September 25th:
      • Novi did lift their BWA today
      • This is happening sooner in Novi due to the fact that Novi started their BWA approximately four days sooner than Wixom
      • Lifting a BWA requires sampling and testing:
        • two passing samples, each sample requires 24 hours
        • Wixom is flushing hydrants today in preparation for sampling
        • Wixom's first sample should be taken today
        • if both samples pass (after 48 hours total), Wixom will be able to lift the BWA:
          • the earliest possible date for lifting the BWA in Wixom is Thursday, October 2nd
  • Full restoration of safe water service, i.e. complete repair of the 42-inch water main, is expected in 7 to 12 days
  • GLWA, and the City of Wixom, continue to ask for your cooperation and conservation of water (no car washing, no sprinkling of lawns, etc.) during this emergency:
    • to limit additional stress on the system, and;
    • to increase the likelihood of lifting this current BWA sooner and avoiding the need for another BWA and/or other impacts on everyone's daily lives in our community
    • until the 42-inch water main is repaired fully
  • Finally, GLWA provided checklists (one for residents and one for businesses) which can be used AFTER the BWA is lifted to safely begin using water like usual once again

We are providing the checklists for use in preparation for the lifting of the BWA.  Again, the BWA is still in place and these checklists should not be used until AFTER the BWA is lifted.

The full GLWA Update #6 (as of 09/30/2025 at 1:00 PM) is available HERE.

Please also be aware that there are other sources of confusion in this situation including news outlets with dated information.  Another example is the Oakland County website which had maps indicating communities which are subject to BWA's BUT their information and maps are ONLY for communities serviced by the Office of the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner (WRC).  Wixom is NOT serviced by the WRC and was not included in the Oakland County information and map even though Wixom IS still subject to a BWA.  We recommend looking at City of Wixom updates for definitive information for Wixom regarding OUR Boil Water Advisory.

September 29th Update

An event affecting the water supply in our area began last week.  Initially, the City of Wixom was able to maintain water pressure and quality at safe levels.  Unfortunately, the water supply was further affected in Wixom at approximately 6:00 AM today, Monday, September 29th.  This caused the system water pressure for the City of Wixom to drop to a level that led to the issuance of a Boil Water Advisory.

In response, the City is working with nearby communities, the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner's Office and the Great Lakes Water Authority in an effort to provide additional water supply to the City.  The goal is to restore the City's water supply to safe pressure and water quality standards.

The success of these ongoing efforts is yet to be determined at this time.

For now, the City of Wixom is STILL subject to a Boil Water Advisory as detailed below:
