POSITION TITLE: Equipment Operator
REPORTS TO: Foreman of Department Public Works
SUPERVISES: On occasion, acts as lead worker of seasonal employees.
QUALIFICATION: High school Diploma or equivalent; valid Michigan Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License Class A (within 5 months of hire); experience with equipment listed below (or comparable to); able to work outside in adverse conditions; ability to lift at least 50 lbs. consistently during the day.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties as shown are not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed within this classification. Essential duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs a variety of tasks involving physical strength and agility, such as breaking pavement and sidewalks, digging holes and trenches, cleaning and sweeping of downtown streets and sidewalks.
- Picks up rubbish, brush, leaves and other refuse as required.
- Assists in performing various street maintenance activities, repairing catch basins, manholes, pouring and finishing of concrete sidewalks.
- Assists with the maintenance of cemetery, parks and playground areas which include repairing of play structures, dragging and lining ball fields and cleaning public restrooms.
- Assists in street cold patching, crack filling, grading and mowing crews.
- Assists with installation of street signs and other markers.
- Planting and watering of trees, shrubs and flowers.
- Assists in the performance of various tasks in plumbing, carpentry and general maintenance on City owned facilities. Experience and/or license in HVAC, Plumbing, Mechanical Services, Carpentry or other skilled trade preferred.
- Operates power-driven equipment and hand tools.
- Operates front-end loader, backhoe, grader, chipper, bucket truck and any other heavy equipment.
- Performs snow removal operation, using plow trucks, snow throwers and salt spreaders.
- The employee may be exposed to machinery and vibration, chemicals or fumes, high and precarious places or confined places, outside weather or environmental conditions.
- Applicant must be self-motivated, punctual and prompt in performing tasks and display a positive attitude.
- Possess skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts and able to assess situations and effectively respond to them.
- Possess ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with the public, employees, contractors, regulatory agencies and City officials.
- Must pass police background check to work in secured facilities, including physical and drug testing.
- Must be available to work after hours, weekends and for emergency call-ins.
- Applicant must be available to work a 9.375-hour day x 4 times a week, on a rotating schedule.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Position is 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM 4 days per week.
